Gertie's Community News - 2017
Victorian Evening, High Street, Portishead - Friday 15th December
For the second year the Gertie Gale's Allotment Association had a stall, organised by Chris Sanders, in a good central position in the High Street for the Victorian Evening. They had an amazing range of fabulous things, including :-
Marmalade; jam; chutneys; coconut ice; planted pots of hyacinth bulbs, lavender plants, strawberry plants; pre-loved gardening and cookery books; hand-made Christmas bunting; wipe-able aprons; knitted bags; knitted fingerless gloves; knitted and crochet Christmas tree decorations; local publications of calendars and cards and booklet titled "What I Found In My Allotment" written by Dr. Bill Dixon.
Chris afterwards said
"Thank you and well done to everyone who contributed to a successful Gertie Gale's stall at Friday's Victorian Evening. There were so many different people who helped in so many ways :-
Those who provided the fabulous things we sold. Those who set the whole stall up (and those who helped dismantle it all at the end). Those who made our banner and publicity handouts. Those who came along, wrapped up warm, and sold things on the stall. And those who came to visit our stall.
Everyone should be very proud of themselves. Thank you everyone.
After all of our costs we have so far made £134.85 profit. This should increase a bit more as there are still a couple of loose ends to tie up.
Also several people have commented that we were a very noticeable presence on the High Street. Lots more people will know about the allotments at Gertie Gales now!
Thank you again. May you all have a relaxing Christmas and be ready to meet up back on our plots in the New Year. Very best wishes, Chris Sanders."

Site Tidy-up Weekends 8th, 9th July and 5th, 6th August
To all tenants from the committee.
Thank you for those that tidied up the allotment ready for the Portishead in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions. The place looks a lot better, the number of weeds have been reduced and overall it looks like a cared-for allotment.
It has been especially pleasing to see so many people cutting the grass around theirs and their neighbours plots. This action alone helps keep costs down for us all.
The main jobs left to do are :- a) cut back the nettles etc. underneath the hedges down the sides of the allotment and along the bottom of the allotment; b) to trim back the hedges.
Again thank you for all of those that have helped make the allotments a tidier place and please, please keep on cutting the grass at regular intervals going forward as it helps us all and stops the spread of weeds.
Thank you.
